Review

I finished this book so fast because of how much of a page turner it was. The dialogue scenes were so vivid and intoxicating because you can somehow hear the sass and the chaos that the characters are emoting. It's a lot darker than I expected, but you follow each of the main character's descent into insanity -- which just about made me want to scream as well. But aside from that, I might just be a stickler for 1960s glamour, descriptions of gorgeous people and Hollywood scandals, and of the tragedy of love affairs. I also grew attached to the successes of Anne, Jennifer, and Neely and passionately wanted each of them to triumph in the end. I love books that can paint their characters so vividly that you feel personally affected by their wins and losses. One shortcoming (though it isn't the main focus of the book) is my lack of devotion towards the male characters. In this world, it seems like only men win, which is something I wish could have not been the case.

Quotes

"What I said before, about people trying to do the thing they really wanted to do. I meant that. I did it when I came to New York. No one should give up a dream without giving it a chance to come true."

“And you realize that time is the most precious thing. Because time is life. It's the only thing you can never get back."
